Color Discharge Printing Without The Use Of An Illuminating Dye

Summary

This abstract describes research conducted in fulfillment of a Degree of Masters of Science in Textile Management and Technology at the College of Textiles at NCSU. The research explored several methods for imparting colored patterns onto a fabric during discharge printing without the use of an illuminating dye. The process described preserves the unique aesthetic properties characteristic of conventional discharge printing- such as intricate, detailed patterns in light colors on a dark ground. The fabrics that were produced utilized numerous combinations of dye classes; several types of discharge agents; and fabric constructions not typically associated with discharge printing. After printing, critical properties such as lightfastness and wet and dry crocking were evaluated to ensure the fabrics met or exceeded ASTM standards. The research revealed that it is possible to impart unique colored patterns on a dark ground without using an illuminating dye. The process proved to be simpler and less expensive than traditional discharge printing.
