Quallity and Spinnability Assessment of Egyption Cotton

Summary

The textile industry in Egypt depends mainly on cotton and cotton represents 90% at least of its consumption from fibres. It is well known that the Egyptian cotton has unique properties and is of highquality and spinnability in comparison to other cottons produced elsewhere in the world.
According to Cotton Arbitration and Testing General Organization (CATGO) system, evaluation of quality and spinnability of Egyptian cotton was given in terms of, fibre length (2.5% span length, 50% span length, mean length uniformity index, uniformity ratio); fibre bundle strength (Pressley index, tenacity, and elongation); fibre fineness (micronaire reading, and hair weight), lea pro duct and trash content. It was found that some of these parameters improved, while the others decreases or unchanged, i.e. there are no single value to evaluate the quality or spinnability of tested fibres. Also, the disadvantages of these parameters are: (a) they are tedious and lengthy, and (b) none can give reliable information about the full evaluation of tested fibres.
Thus, it is abvious that a simple and rapid method for evaluation of both quality and spinnability of cotton is badly needed. The present work undertaken to fill this gap. A scientific, accurate, and rapid method is presented to measure both quality and spinnability of Egyptian cottons. This method Is build on pure mathematical bases without any approximation.
It was found that, final selection parameters include, fibre length (2.5% span length); fibre tenacity (g/te x); fibre fineness (milltex); and fibre appearance (trash % and neps/g), i.e. only 4 instead of 16 physical fibre properties. Also both degradation pattern and new approach to modified quality control chart of tested Egyptia cotton (1990/1997), were given.
