Summary

Samples of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were prepared from agricultural wastes, viz., match-sticks pulp and palm-rachises pulp. These CMC samples were polymerized with acrylic acid (AA) using potassium persulphate (K2S2O8) initiation system. Variables studied included concentration of acrylic acid (AA) as well as neutralization of (AA) using different concentrations of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The polymerized samples were monitored for percent polymer yield (Total conversion T.C., graft yield G. Y. and homopolymer H. %) and carboxyl content. Based on the results obtained, the most appropriate conditions for polymerization was established and used further for polymerization of acrylic acid (AA), acrylonitrile (AN), acrylamide (Aam) and methacrylic acid (MAA) onto the same samples. It was found that percent polymer yield and carboxyl content increase significantly by increasing monomer concentration meanwhile increasing the degree of neutralization of AA with NaOH is accompained by a decrease in both the percent polymer yield and carboxyl content. Result of T.C.,G.y. and H% make it evident that these composite characteristics and rely largely on nature of the monomer and nature of the substrate.
