Volume Porosity of Cotton Woven Fabrics
Summary
Today's woven fabric production demands developing strategies with regard to new construction
so that sample weaving is reduced to a minimum or even eliminated. Achieving such goals is a complex task based on knowledge of the connections between woven fabric constructional parameters and predetermined fabric properties that fit the desired quality. Cotton woven fabric as a porous material allows the transmission of energy and substances and is therefore an interesting material for different applications such as garment and technical end-uses. The proposed paper deals with the effect of yarn linear density, weave value, and fabric tightness on a cotton woven fabric's volume porosity. We propose a new experimental model to predict volume porosity by using a factor analysis. Such a geometric method is not based on an ideal model of porous structure, but on the experiments that better describe the real porous structure of woven fabrics. The experimental results of volume porosity correspond very well with calculated values according to the proposed equation. It is also worth mentioning that our proposed experimental geometric method includes parameters that are all know before the fabric is made.
