German textile industry faces strike threat

The German trade union IG Metall, has announced warning strikes in the clothing and textile industry for next week after a third round of talks in the current pay negotiations failed to produce results earlier this week. A no-strike agreement is due to expire on Friday.

The union is demanding a 5.5 per cent pay increase for 12 months, while management is offering a 2.7 per cent rise for 14 months from March 2008 and a further 2.3 per cent increase for 10 months from May 2009.
