PAKISTAN: Textile and Garment Exports Up 7% in Year-To-Date.
Textile and garment exports from Pakistan have risen 6.8% in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year, according to trade data released yesterday.
The Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) said textile and clothing exports rose to US$9.32bn in the period from July 2009 to May 2010, up from $8.73bn in the prior year.
The value of readymade garment exports rose 3.7% to $1.16bn, while knitwear shipments edged up just 0.9% to $1.59bn.
In terms of volume, shipments of readymade garments slipped 6.4% while knitwear exports were down 5.4%.
The value of shipments of raw cotton and cotton yarn climbed 134.6% and 28.2% respectively, the data showed.
The figures showed that textile and garment exports accounted for 53% of Pakistan's $17.6bn in total exports during the 11-month period.
In the month of May, textile and clothing exports were up 5.7% year-on-year to $875m.
The rise in exports comes despite the industry being hit by protest rallies against ongoing price hikes and a shortage of cotton yarns in the domestic market, as well as widespread interruptions to electricity and gas supplies.
