Peru’s textile and apparel exports likely to grow 10% to US$ 1.6 billion this year

LIMA: Peru’s textile and apparel exports are likely to grow 10 percent to 1.6 billion dollars this year, predicted Scotiabank Peru analyst Pablo Nano.

He said exports are showing some recovery as a result of gradual improvement in external demand.

However, the volume of exports for this year would be still below the peak of 2,018 million recorded in 2008.

The analyst predicted that recovery would begin in the second quarter of 2010, when buyers, mainly from the United States, decide to place orders for spring-summer in the Northern Hemisphere and as soon as a gradual recovery of global economy is noticed.

Although he said the trend of placing small orders will continue.

These purchases would place pressure on profit margins of local exporters, because they miss out on some economies of scale when producing smaller batches; unit costs increase as well.
