SRI LANKA: Trade Minister, NCTO Chief Discuss Garment Exports

Minister of Export Development and International Trade, Professor G.L. Peiris met in Washington D.C. with Mr. Cass Johnson, President of the National Council of Textile Organizations of the United States for discussions about expanded access for apparel products from Sri Lanka into U. S. markets. The Minister emphasized the strengths of the Sri Lankan apparel sector and drew attention to the optimal satisfaction expressed by major American buyers with regard to the merits of Sri Lankan suppliers’ consistent adherence to the most exacting quality standards, delivery on time, competitiveness and innovation in respect of design and other market requirements.

He made particular reference to the exceptionally high ethical standards prevailing in Sri Lanka garment factories and the concept of environment friendly or “green and lean” apparel plants which have become an integral part of Sri Lanka’s culture in the apparel sector.

Mr. Cass Johnson assured the Minister that his organization would remain in close touch with the Sri Lankan apparel sector with a view to exploring awareness for enhanced collaboration.
