UK April retail sales up 0.9 percent from March
Retail sales in the UK rose 0.9 percent in April from March, but the increase over a three-month period was the lowest in 13 years, the government said Thursday.

The strong April sales put retail volume 2.6 percent ahead of a year ago, led by an 11.9 percent gain at clothing, footwear and textile stores, the Office for National Statistics said. Seasonally adjusted sales volume in the February-April quarter was 0.7 percent higher than the comparable period last year, the smallest increase since January 1996, the agency said. For the three months, textile, clothing and footwear volume rose 8.9 percent while household goods fell 7.9 percent, which the agency said was the largest drop since its current record series began.
