EU officials are ‘suspicious’ that clothes tagged as products of Hong Kong and South Korea may actually be from China because textile shipments have more than doubled this year, the ministry said.
Hebei’s exports of 10 types of Chinese apparel to the EU have fallen 12% in the first five months of this year while Cambodia’s EU exports surged sevenfold, according to the statement.
Hebei’s provincial government has been ordered to investigate possible incidents of illegal transshipments because the volume of Chinese textile found by the US and EU officials have been mislabeled will be deducted from future quota. Last year, China agreed to limit exports of clothing to the European Union and the US under a new quota system that will be in place through 2008.
