An Information Systems Implementation Model with Quality Management Approach

Summary

Information systems projects have a bad reputation due to different types of failures experienced in implementation. In most cases, a significant amount of money and effort is spent for these projects. Therefore, an effective approach to information systems implementations to reduce the risk of failure is critical for success. In this regard, this paper offers a quality management approach for implementing of information systems. A model has been developed based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA). The model consists of three stages: Pre- implementation stage, implementation stage, and post-implementation stage. First, the importance of leadership during the course of the implementation is addressed as a major factor for the implementation. Second, strategic planning and customer and market focus are discussed in the pre-implementation stage. Team development and project management constitutes the implementation stage as a third step. Team formation and types of teams are discussed in the team development section. Besides, different types of project management techniques are presented for the organizations to choose according to their strategies. Human resource management and performance measurement are the two areas that have been concentrated in the post-implementation period. The importance of managing the users and determining the performance rates of both the users and the systems for continuous improvement has been emphasized. Overall, this research offers an effective implementation guide for information systems to diminish the failure risk to zero.
