Recent Researches in Cotton Bleaching

Summary

Pretreatment processes of textiles continues to expand each year as older products and processes are replaced by the technological diffusion of novel products and innovative processes. One of the most important processes of pretreatment is bleaching. Low temperature bleaching of cotton with peracetic acid is proposed as an alternative to hypochlorite bleaching. Peracetic acid is completely safe concerning its waste water situation. It decomposes to acetic acid and oxygen. In this paper it is attempted to compare the quality, cost, energy consumption of peracetic acid bleached cotton, with that bleached with hydrogen peroxide and hypochlorite. However the bleaching mechanizms and the effects of transition metal ions on the proposed bleaching method and conventional methods are discussed.
