Asia–Europe container rates fall as Suez Canal transits pick up, Drewry index shows

Container freight rates between Asia and Europe eased again this week, pulling Drewry's composite World Container Index down 1% to $4,468 per 40-foot container, according to Drewry data reported by IndexBox on 26 September.

Europe lanes soften, US lanes hold

• Shanghai–Rotterdam: $3,485, down 4%
• Shanghai–Genoa: $3,835, down 5%
• Shanghai–Los Angeles: $7,838, up 2%
• Shanghai–New York: $10,373, unchanged

Drewry attributed the decline mainly to softer pricing on Asia–Europe routes. Carriers have scheduled 7 blank sailings on Asia–Europe services for the coming week against 3 this week, and 15 on transpacific routes against 9.

At the same time, weekly Suez Canal transits increased from 41 to 48, improving effective capacity on Asia–Europe lanes. Drewry expects rates to fall further next week ahead of China's Golden Week holiday, as recovering capacity outweighs blank sailings.

Fibre2Fashion noted separately that the gap between Shanghai–New York and Shanghai–Rotterdam rates has widened to about $6,888 per container, more than double the gap in early July, and described it as a shipment window rather than a basis for long-term freight commitments.

What it means for Egyptian exporters

Cheaper and more plentiful Asia–Europe shipping narrows one of Egypt's selling points to EU buyers: short, reliable transit compared with Asian suppliers. Egyptian exporters should lead with speed-to-market, small-batch flexibility and duty-free access rather than freight cost alone. The rise in Suez Canal traffic is good news for Egypt's economy and for its own import costs for machinery and inputs. On the US side, Asia–US rates remain high, which keeps Egypt's QIZ offer to American buyers competitive.
