Summary

Courtelle acrylic yarns were cross-linked using hexandiol and pentaerythritol as potential cross-linking agents. Cross-linking of the yarns was achieved via the methylacrylate group present as a copolymer component in the commercially produced fibres. Cross-linking decreased fibre solubility and increased yarn thermal stability. The dry tensile strength properties of the yarns were maintained. The treatments also enhanced the hot wet recovery properties of the cross-linked materials. Fabrics made from the cross-linked yarns exhibited a lower tendency to pill. Cross-linking modified the dyeing behaviour of the yarns and dye uptake was found to decrease with increasing reaction efficiency. The cross-linking procedures could also be applied after dyeing
