Global textile fabrics output reaches record
Global production of textile fabrics reached record levels in the final quarter of 2004, driven by "stunning" growth in output in Asia, a top industry body said on Tuesday.

The International Textiles Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) said in a statement that global production rose 26.4 per cent from the figure for the last quarter of 2003, while output in Asia over the same period grew by 56.9 per cent.
Production of finished fabrics in Asia rose 18.7 per cent compared to the previous quarter.
Pakistan stood out with growth of 21.4 per cent over the final three months of 2004, and year-on-year growth of 74.5 per cent, according to the ITMF data.European fabric production grew by 9.5 per cent over the previous quarter and by 6.2 per cent on an annual basis, while the United States posted more modest year-on-year growth of 3.6 per cent.
South American fabric producers suffered a sharp decline in output of 3.2 per cent during the last three months of 2004, equivalent to 22.6 per cent decline compared to the final quarter of 2003, the ITMF said.
Major shifts in the pattern of global textiles and clothing production are expected following the end of trade quotas on January 1, 2005 that had effectively capped the growth of China textiles industry and to a lesser degree India’s exports.
