Warning: The demand on the Egyptian cotton fiber is highly increasing while the cultivation area is declining.

The General Committee for Organizing Cotton Trade has announced a warning regarding the jeopardy in the cotton areas plantation decrease year after year and the effect of that on the national income and the peasants’ revenue. The concern with the Egyptian cotton production decrease will eventually lead to the loss of Egypt’s traditional international markets which has been there for tens of years. This year’s targeted area for cotton plantation in Egypt is about 481.000 feddan, and compared to last year’s 583.000 feddan, the high rate decrease is tremendous.

The Chairman of the GCOOT, Eng. Adel Ezzi, has stated that the international indicators and the local needs for the Egyptian cotton assures the increase of demand and the rise of prices in the coming season with an equal rate of the international planted crop. He also added that the prices will be high due to the increase of demand by the local yarns manufacturers and importers. This points to bring rewarding prices for cultivation and production for the next season.

Ezzi said that the amount of exported cotton for this season has reached about 2.5 million kantar and that the committee's plan is to promote the cotton cultivation and help its producers to receive the highest prices.

He also affirmed that the cotton delivery prices from the producer will increase by the end of the current season, due to soaring local and international demand for cotton.
